Women are an integral part of society. Making each and every place accessible to them 24x7 is our social responsibility. Educational standards need to be lifted so that awareness develops in society. Women should feel safe whether it is a secluded or non-secluded place. Respecting and supporting women is the duty of everyone and all should work to make society a safer place

Implement laws strictly

Our society is not safe for women even in the twenty-first century. Until and unless strict laws are not implemented nothing will change. In order to make secluded areas safe for women, a check-post must be set up and police must keep a record of commuters. Identity cards must be issued to residents living in such areas. CCTVs must be installed and surveillance should be through drone cameras as well. Women should also learn self-defence training. Miscreants found harassing women shoud not be spared at any cost and must be awarded capital punishment.

People must assist others

If we want to make cities safer for women, there is a need to understand that it is the responsibility of every citizen. Due to stringent laws people hesitate to help others. This is the sole reason that residents refrain from assisting a needy person. As a result, India suffers as a whole. To develop a safe society, we must know about our rights. Anyone in need should be helped without fear. This little gesture will protect people, expecially women, from anti-social elements. One must not enter into a scuffle but can atleast inform the police at the earliest.

Install state-of-the-art security system

With reports of dreadful incidents of rape, acid attacks and assault on women, safety of women has taken a backseat, especially in secluded areas. Though the government has come up with policies to improve the safety of women, the implementation of such policies never lives up to the expectations. In order to make secluded areas safe for women, the authorities concerned should overcome the issue of improper street lighting. Crime-prone areas should be mapped with an elaborate system which must ensure that help reaches a women in a matter of minutes. Installation of the state-of-the-art security system and connecting it with a central station can be an excellent way to provide safety to women.

Ravi Chander Garg

Map secluded areas

Free self-defence training sessions should be conducted regularly at educational institutions or at public places so that women can learn defence techniques. India is a place that attracts a lot of tourists. Lone women travellers should be provided with helpline numbers and city maps at the airport itself. Crime-prone areas or dark spots in city should be mapped up. Street lights must be installed in the city, particularly at secluded places.

Learn self-defence skills

The crime rate among women is increasing day by day against in the city. Women have to go through eve-teasing, abuses, stalking, acid attack, rape and what not? How can girls protect themselves? First, we have to protect ourseleves, only then others can help us. One must learn self- defence techniques, including judo, karate and martial arts. Parents should teach their boys to respect girls. Boys must be questioned about where they are going? When will they come? People should help a girl whenever they find her in distress rather than staying silent. There are numerous mobile Apps, including SOS, VithU and Safetipin, among others, which send location of a girl just with a tab in real time to her family members and friends. The police should patrol deserted areas frequently at night.

Need to teach men as well

Education is the key to a civilised society. And education should also involve basic ethics in which our society is lacking. We need to teach men that women are not for their entertainment. Women are in no way inferior to men in any field. A proper education system that inculcates basic ethics can bring a fruitful result.

Police must register an FIR without hiccups

Incidents of sexual violence with girls and women is increasing every day. It is not just regarding safeguarding women but also about the mentality of society. Street lights should be installed in every nook and corner of the city so that women feel safe at night. CCTVs should be installed and their daily monitoring should be made mandatory. Women shoul be self reliant and learn self-defence skills. Further, helpline numbers provided by the government should be active. Police should register an FIR without any hassle. Beat box should be set up in secluded areas.

Navdeep Kaur

Increase police patrolling

It is a bitter truth that crime against women has witnessed an upward trend in Ludhiana. Culprits take undue advantage of secluded areas to commit the crime. Such places should be earmarked by the administration and CCTV cameras should be installed. Street lights should be installed so that anti- social elements cannot take advantage of odd hours. Police patrolling should be deployed at secluded places. If possible, the Ludhiana MC should come up with a plan to make parks in such areas. Girls and women should be taught martial arts to tackle any untoward incident and instill a sense of confidence in them.

Bir Devinder Singh Bedi

NGOs should assist police

The non-governmental organisations (NGOs) should come forward to assist the police by deputing their members along with cops in civil dress in secluded areas at late night to keep check suspicious activities of anti-social elements. Women must be provided an emergency number to call the police and mobile phones should feature a button which can send alert directly to nearest police station in case of distress. Offenders harassing women must be punished in a stern manner. Schools and colleges should hold special defence training programmes for girls.

Need to change mindest

The root cause of atrocities among women is the mindset of people which can only be changed through education. It's high time that steps are taken at an individual-level to safeguard women from anti-social elements as authorities concerned are sleeping. Women should be trained in self-defence skills. Pepper spray and Swiss knives should be carried by women who travel at odd hours. Use technology as a weapon and install mobile apps which alert family members or police in case of any untoward incident. Installation of CCTVs can help in reducing the crime.

Tanvi Gulati

Involve women in planning process

The authorities concerned should take steps to improve street lighting in the city. The police should depute more cops at secluded areas. The administration should consult women when they are taking steps related to their security. Women and girls are experts of their own safety. Therefore, they must participate in the planning process and come out with best solutions

Kritika Bhalla

Fix dysfunctional CCTVs

Installing CCTV cameras at isolated spots alsone cannot ensure safety of women. CCTV's footage should also be monitored regularly, especially at odd hours to instill confidence in women and fear in minds of anti-social elements. The administration has failed to fix dysfunctional cameras since ages. Footage can be come handy to identify culprit and can also be used as evidence in the court.

MC, police and residents should work in tandem

Secluded areas in the city must be made safe for women with active coordination of the Municipal Corporation, police and local residents. The MC must install street lights and CCTV cameras at different spots. The policemen should always be on duty and patrolling teams should be deployed at secluded areas. Residents should also play a positive role by staying vigilant and report any untoward incident to the police immediately. Women complaint cell numbers should be widely publicised by the authorities.

Stand for yourself

It is true that everyone wants a safe and free life. But since we all know the position of women in India, we cannot claim that a girl is 100 per cent safe here. We all are responsible for it. Until we change our thinking towards girls, it is impossible to find a way out. Girls should not consider themselves as vulnerable. They should be able to fight for themselves. Girls are not weak. Nobody will help you unless you stand for yourself. So girls should believe in themselves.

Women safety and empowerment

Women all over the world are facing violence at home and workplace. With major incidents being reported in rural and secluded areas, we have to save them from injustice by offering various services like providing formal shelter homes, emergency services and police support. Proper sessions should be designed to impart them knowledge regarding their rights and empowerment.

Let your family know about your whereabouts

The first line of defence when it comes to your safety is your home, which means that securing it is a must. A solution to this is to invest in a high quality security system. Now-a-days, you can invest in smart door locks that stop burglars. Second is letting your friends and family know about your whereabouts. Thirdly, carrying handy weapons such as chilli powder, and a Swiss knife is useful when in trouble. The most important thing is that sometimes our instinct itself plays a big role. We should also follow our instincts in case of any suspicious situation

Ishita Sharma

Keep weapons handy

Women must protect themselves by knowing about self-defence. She should not depend on others to take any action after any crime takes place. The government must take necessary steps for protecting the welfare of women. Women must carry handy weapons such as chilli powder, safety pin and small knife and use them very confidently if they feel that their dignity (respect) is at risk. They should always carry a fully-charged mobile phone. The ones on night shifts should be even more alert to avoid any untoward happening. They should download apps and keep emergency numbers on their mobile phones if any emergency strikes.

24X7 helpline number to come to rescue

In this era, where everyone talks about equality and freedom, females are still unsafe and are harassed many a times in their life. Even in the 21st century, the mindset of our society has not changed yet when it comes to females. Getting education has become quite a difficult task for girls because they get exploited even at bus stops and railway stations while travelling to schools and colleges. A helpline number should always be available for females and officials need to be quick enough to reach the women in need and should make sure that CCTV cameras are installed at all the secluded areas.

Akanksha Attri

Intensify police patrolling

Planning and designing safe places for women and girls means the enhanced safety and feeling of safety among women folk. Well-lit roads and parks should be there to reduce the chances of vulnerability in isolated areas. Public transport system should be strengthened. All autos and taxis should have meters which are enabled with GPS system. Every bus should have a few panic buttons which alerts the police control room. Police patrolling should be intensified. FIRs should be properly registered and followed up by filling of charge sheet etc. Ladies police stations are an important need of the hour. Awareness programmes about women safety should be organized. Online help lines should be set up so that unsafe situations can be averted.

Dr Jasdeep Kaur

Ensuring safety everyone's responsibility

Safety of women cannot be ensured unless people realise that it is their own responsibility to make our surroundings and our city safe for women.

They should not ignore any such happening and should take an action immediately. They should inform the police as soon as possible and step forward to protect the women. Women should be strong and brave enough to stand against anything which they consider wrong.

Ekroop Kaur

Increase surveillance

Safety of women matters a lot, whether at home or outside the home. Some of the women's safety initiatives include improving street lighting, installing surveillance cameras on public transport and at stations and introducing all female police forces that can somehow make the city worth living for women, so that women can move anywhere without any second thought.

Khushboo Singla

Police, administration should pull up socks

As we are hearing cases relating to rape and molestation very frequently, it can't be said that the city is safe as it used to be years ago. There's always a sense of insecurity while going out. One of the reasons can be increase of the liquor and drug addiction in Ludhiana. Several measures should be taken. First of all the crowded areas should be monitored with CCTV cameras. They should be thoroughly monitored especially during late hours. Secondly, there should be helpline numbers which everyone should be aware of.

Ravleen Kaur

Organise self-defence sessions for free

Secluded areas in the cities are not safe for women. Offenders often take advantage of dark and secluded places to commit crimes. Thus, proper street lights must be set up in all areas. Street lights can help women to step out late at night. Free self-defence training sessions should be conducted in educational institutions or public spots so that women can learn to defend themselves.

Kamaldeep Kaur

Be bold and confident

Carrying a pepper spray every time and everywhere is not possible. At the same time, though technology and presence of police forces can help but being present at every nook and corner is neither feasible nor helpful in each situation. One thing which is always there with a female, no matter what, is her strength and confidence in herself. If she is self sufficient by being physically fit and is well versed with self-defence techniques, a little bit of courage and self belief may add icing to the cake.

Lovisha Narula

Refrain from going out late at night

The police should increase their vigil and patrolling in the secluded areas, which are also dimly lit, especially during late hours as the presence of the police will deter the criminals to some extent. Women too must refrain from venturing out in late hours in the isolated area even if they are accompanied by a male friend or relative

Dr Ashwani K Malhotra

Follow instincts, stay alert

Our country for the past few years has been witnessing the worst times for women. People need to realise the fact that women are not mere commodities but human beings with emotions. Secluded areas are riddled with dark corners and obstacles that prove to be perfect hiding places for potential attackers. An effort has to be made to make such areas well lit. On our part, we should follow our instincts and stay alert.

Ishita Katyal

Well-lit surroundings can reduce chances of crime

While planning and designing safe public spaces for women, planners, designers and architects should place special focus on lighting, visibility, motorised traffic, potential hiding spots, signage, security personnel, proximity to emergency services, and access to public transportation. Streetlamps are not the only way to do this. Ask that each household turn on their porch light
