Ludhiana, April 5
The District Legal Services Authority (DLSA) has come to the rescue of a 38-year-old mentally retarded woman Sudha and her 7-year-son Shiv Kumar residing in the CRPF Colony quarters here.
It all started when the woman’s husband, who used to work in the PWD, died last year. She did not weep after his death and went into depression. Her son, who used to play with the street children actively and was a regular school student, faced a tough time and confined himself to the house, said area residents. The matter was brought to the knowledge of DLSA by Surjit Dave of Dugri.
After coming to know about the pitiable condition of the woman, the DLSA swung into action. The chairman of the DLSA-cum-Sessions Judge Gurbir Singh instructed the DLSA Secretary-cum-CJM Dr Gurpreet Kaur to look into the matter seriously.
The matter was taken up with the Civil Surgeon, Ludhiana, who deputed Dr Vivek Goyal, a psychiatrist, to accompany CJM on the spot.
Thereafter, Dr Gurpreet Kaur visited the spot.
Dr Vivek Goyal checked the woman and found her in a very poor medical condition. The ambulance was called and the woman was shifted to Civil Hospital in the department of psychiatrist.
Para legal volunteer Geeta Devi changed the clothes of the boy and he was shifted to Deep Hospital, Model Town, for treatment.
With the intervention of the DLSA, Dr Navdeep Goyal and hospital authorities admitted the boy to Deep Hospital and offered free medical treatment.
Talking to The Tribune, Sessions Judge Gurbir Singh said after their treatment, the authority would take steps to rehabilitate them by involving government agencies as well as NGOs.
