Lovers jump into Sirhind Canal, boy drowns

DORAHA: A boy and a girl jumped into the Sirhind Canal this afternoon near the Gurthali bridge here.

A boy and a girl jumped into the Sirhind Canal this afternoon near the Gurthali bridge here. The boy was said to have drowned while the girl was rescued by divers.

The boy has been identified as Gurkaran Singh of Jassian village in Ludhiana district. The girl is a student of Plus Two (Non-Medical) at Government Senior Secondary School, Jawahar Nagar Camp. 

The duo came from Ludhiana on a motorcycle (PB 10 JD 1490). They parked it near the banks of the canal. The girl and the boy tied their arms with a dupatta and jumped into the canal.

The boy was washed away by the current but the girl was rescued and admitted to Sidhu Hospital. She was still in Intensive Care Unit. 

The girl’s mother reached the spot. She said the girl and the boy both liked each other and wished to get married. But they were waiting for the girl to attain marriageable age.     

The police were waiting for the boy’s parents before they could conduct further investigation. Traffic in-charge Gurdip Singh Theki, along with the divers, was searching for the body of Gurkaran.
