LUDHIANA: Members of Rishi Nagar F-Block Welfare Association held a function to honour Mayor Balkar Singh Sandhu at Rishi Nagar on Sunday. Members said it was a matter of pride that Sandhu, who had been five-time councillor of the area, has become the Mayor of the city. Sunil Dutt from the association said Sandhu had been an honest person and worked dedicatedly for the welfare of the ward. Sandhu said he would work hard for improving the function of the MC and it would bring more transparency as well. The Mayor, Senior Deputy Mayor Shyam Sundar Malhotra and Deputy Mayor Sarabjit Kaur Shimlapuri were also honoured by the youth wing of the district Congress at the Circuit House.

16 marriages solemnised

Sahnewal: A total of 16 marriages of the needy and poor couples were solemnised by the efforts of the members of Dr Bheem Rao Ambedkar Club (Regd.) Sahnewal at Garden Palace on Sunday. The marriages were solemnised at Gurdwara Reru Sahib under the guidance of Baba Major Singh, in-charge, Kaar Seva. Club president Gurdeep Singh said this was an annual feature and every year they ask such couples, who are not at all in a position to make their marriages happen, to register themselves with the club. Kuldeep Singh, cashier at the club, said: “We were to solemnise 21 marriages, but five couples have still not grown to be of marriageable age. So we had to take them out of our list.” OC

Sahaita holds annual function

Ludhiana: ‘Sahaita India’ celebrated its annual function at Guru Nanak Dev Bhawan on Sunday. It is a non-profit organisation committed to educating, supporting and uplifting the underprivileged members of the society, according to the NGO members.  Children performed a ‘vandana’, Rajasthani dance, giddha, bhangra among other items. Children from SGB Bal Ghar presented a Haryanvi dance. President of Swami Ganga Nand Bhuriwale International Foundation, Dham Talwandi Khurd, Jasvir Kaur was honoured with the ‘Maan Punjab Da’ award. Besides, Sarpanch Baljinder Singh Ghali from Mansa and others were also honoured. Sahaita president Dr Rajinder Singh and members including Dr Santosh, Dr Swarandeep Singh, Kuldeep Singh Mann were also present.  TNS

Assault victim dies, suspects face murder charge

Two days after Amritpal Singh (19) suffered severe head injuries in an attack, he succumbed to injuries on Saturday evening.  The assault case has now been converted into murder case. Those booked have been identified as Davinder Singh, Balwinder Singh, Kuldeep Singh, Surjit Singh and Shamsher Singh, all residents of Sujatwal village. They barged into Amritpal’s residence and attacked him with sticks. He was allegedly attacked over disposal of waste water. The suspects are yet to be arrested. TNS

Mystery shrouds death of murder accused

A 65-year-old jail inmate has died under mysterious circumstances. The deceased has been identified as Jai Pal, a resident of Ludhiana. Jail Pal, along with his two sons, was jailed for killing a person in the Koomkalan area in 2017. The undertrial was not keeping well. His condition had deteriorated in the past two days. On Sunday morning, he was rushed to Civil Hospital where he died. Suspecting no foul play, the police initiated inquest proceedings under Section 174, CrPC. TNS 

Servant flees with valuables

Ludhiana: A servant allegedly fled with cash and valuables from his employer’s house after poisoning two women. The complainant, Vinod Dawar, of Kidwai Nagar, said two days ago, they employed a servant, named Sonu, for household work. On the morning of April 7, he left home for work and his wife Veena Dawar and her friend Alex were present in the house. At 1 pm, he returned home. He was shocked to see his wife and another woman lying unconscious and the servant missing. The entire house was ransacked and cash and valuables were stolen. He suspected Sonu’s role behind the incident. TNS
