A mother-daughter duo, who was on their way to attend parents-teachers meeting (PTM), had a miraculous escape after the car they were travelling in slipped into the Sidhwan canal, near Badewal Bridge, on the South City road, on Saturday morning. The car had half drowned into the canal when the duo was saved by a passerby.

The SHO, Sarabha Nagar police station, Brij Mohan, said initially he received information at around 10.30 am that a Honda Civic car had fallen into the Sidhwan canal. “Considering it our jurisdiction, we immediately reached the spot,” he said.

However, when the SHO reached there, some passerby had already saved the mother and daughter.

When contacted, the PAU police station SHO, Sumit Sood, said he was aware about the incident, but the spot was under the jurisdiction of the Raghunath police post.

When contacted, Raghunath police post in charge, ASI Lakhwinder Singh, said after receiving information a police party immediately rushed to the spot, but car occupants, including Geetu Malhotra, a resident of Victoria Garden, and her seven-year-old daughter Samaira were not there. They were saved by a passerby, who witnessed the entire incident, he added.

The duo was driving towards the Ferozepur road from South City when car’s front left tyre burst and it slipped into the canal, the ASI said. Due to low water level in the canal only one side of car drowned, he added.

“We were told by someone that a turbaned man, who witnessed the entire incident, immediately rescued the car occupants. He took of his turban and threw it towards the woman and her daughter, who were stuck in the car. He managed to pull the duo out of the canal. When we reached spot, neither occupants nor the passerby, who turned saviour, was there,” the ASI said.
