The day was observed at HDHI, where Medical Superintendent and Professor of Cardiology Dr Bishav Mohan gave an informative lecture to a wide gathering of patients and their attendants sitting in the reception area of the hospital.
He emphasised that heart diseases have become quite common among the Indian population and besides aged people, heart diseases affect both young children and adults today. The main cause for the increasing number of cardiac related diseases in India is improper lifestyle, he said.
“Today, a large segment of young population remains busy on computers and smartphones and get very less time to keep themselves active in physical activity. The best way to keep heart healthy is to do a 30-minute brisk walk for five days a week.” He also advised people to get rid of old-age myth that a child can have any quantity of food intake. He specifically said that childhood obesity was very dangerous and one should take care that a child doesn’t become fat or obese in his tender age.
SPS Hospital
The day was also observed at SPS Hospital. Dr Navdeep Singh, interventional paediatrician and foetal cardiologist at SPS Hospital said almost 2 lakh children are born every year with various congenital heart diseases in the country and up to 50 per cent of these babies are critical, requiring urgent intervention in the first year itself. Children’s heart diseases account for 10 per cent of all infant mortality in India. A common misconception is that these children either do not survive or even if they do, they are likely to live with a major disability for the rest of their lives. On the contrary, with current modalities of treatment, a majority of these children have a good survival rate and an excellent quality of life.
