Mullanpur, October 17
Despite having a population of nearly 20,000, Mullanpur Dakha town has no bus stand or a bus queue shelter. Dakha segment comprises of the town and over 100 villages. Hundreds of passengers can be seen standing on national highway-5 (NH-5) and waiting for buses to reach their respective destinations.
Ahead of the bypoll, which is scheduled to take place on October 21, voters have been asking candidates to construct the bus stand at the earliest.
Balwinder Singh, former councillor, Mullanpur, raised the demand multiple times during the civic body meetings in the past two decades but to no avail. “Passengers are forced to stand on the road side. Chances of mishaps are very high due to heavy traffic on this stretch,” he said.
Jagsheer Singh, a resident of ward 9 said, “Construction of the bus stand and washrooms was a major poll issue in the past as well. Leaders forget to fulfill their promises after wining election. Students from nearby villages come to study at Dakha College and they travel in buses.”
Simran Dhaliwal of Mullanpur said, “It is a long pending demand of the residents. The upcoming MLA must ensure construction of the bus stand.”
Bahadur Singh, a resident of Dakha village, said their village has no bus service and villagers need to walk for 2 km to reach the town.
Residents of Issewal village also had similar complaint. “There is no bus service for Issewal village. Residents commute on their own vehicles to reach Ludhiana and other areas,” said Harnek Singh.
