Stray cattle to have radium belts, so you can avoid collision at night

Ludhiana, April 30

In order to save precious lives and bring down the number of mishaps in the city, the District Legal Services Authority (DLSA) and the Ludhiana Police, in association with the Oriental Bank of Commerce (OBC), have started an initiative of tying reflective radium belts around the necks of stray cattle, a major reason behind accidents at night.

District and Sessions Judge Gurbir Singh, who is also DLSA Chairman, started the drive. Addressing an event at Bachat Bhawan, the District and Sessions Judge said cattle wandering on roads were one of the major causes of accidents, which claimed precious lives. "In our country, one person dies every four minutes and 15 lives are lost in Punjab every day in accidents," he said.

He also mentioned several such accidents, in which people were injured, went unreported.

The DLSA Chairman claimed by creating awareness and controlling stray cattle menace, road accidents could be reduced by 50 per cent.

He said during the drive, radium belts would be tied around the necks of cattle, so they could be easily visible to commuters. The Department of Animal Husbandry would be responsible for covering all stray cattle under the drive.

These radium belts are available at the offices of DLSA, OBC Branch Feroze Gandhi Market, Animal Husbandry office at Zone-A building of the MC. Any social organisation or individual can contribute to this drive at these places.

He also asked the gathering to follow traffic norms.

The ACP, Gurdev Singh, informed the gathering about traffic awareness week which is being celebrated from April 23 to 30. He said they all could save precious lives by obeying traffic rules.
