Beating drums, strumming strings, banging heads, shrieks, songs, maddening base. It was a heady mix of rock music and adventurous performance of the city’s own Punjabi rock band ‘Snorting Jatts’.
They belted out tracks from their debut album ‘Banda Ban Jah’ apart from several English tracks that inspired them. The audience, comprising mostly youths, all cheered and sang along during the performance at Bistro 226 last Friday night.
Lead vocalist Tejinder Singh Dhir roared, mused, shrieked as the moods swung from romance, social consciousness, urge for freedom to choose and decide one’s fate and host of others. The ambience remained electric with GurAaftab Singh Grewal on base, Angad Singh Bahra on guitar and Shatanu Kalia drumming it up during the two-hour performance.
Youths were in a state of euphoria and all agog for the performance of the band that released their debut album in Punjabi in May this year. Rohit, one of the youths, after head-banging said he had never imagined rock music in Punjabi, but after their performance, he felt that rock and Punjabi were made for each other. Rupinder, another youth, said the performance was electrifying and he would remember it for a long time. For a band that has come up with their first album only around four months ago, the performance was excellent, he said. He had heard their tracks online, but listening to them live was sheer excitement and exhilarating, he said.
Speaking about the band, GurAftaab said this was one of the performance lined among their tour to other parts of India, including Mumbai and South, before they come and begin working on their next album.
