Grewal files his papers amid huge roadshow

Ludhiana, April 26

Senior Akali Dal leader and SAD-BJP candidate from Ludhiana Lok Sabha seat Maheshinder Singh Grewal filed his nomination papers before the Deputy Commissioner-cum-Returning Officer at Mini-Secretariat here today. At the time of filing of papers, he was accompanied by close family members and senior leaders of the SAD and the BJP.

The roadshow held by Grewal from Embassy Palace to DC’s office received an overwhelming response from rank and file of the alliance parties. However, due to security reasons, the party workers were not allowed to enter the premises of the Mini-Secretariat.

Talking to mediapersons after filing his papers, Grewal said he was touched by the response of the people in general and the SAD-BJP workers in particular who had broken all records to join his road show. “It was like coming events cast their shadow before, that today people of Ludhiana pronounced their verdict in favour of the SAD-BJP candidate and resolved to put the Ludhiana LS seat in the NDA kitty to make Narendra Modi Prime Minister of the country once again,” said Grewal. 

Earlier, addressing a rally of SAD-BJP workers at a banquet hall, the Akali Dal leader said both national and local issues would matter during the parliamentary elections. “While people are happy with the government of India’s policies under the Prime Ministership of Narendra Modi, they (the people of Punjab) have completely been alienated and disillusioned with the Congress government as it has failed and belied their expectations,” he asserted. 

  Brimming with confidence over his expected victory, Grewal said, he did not know who would be the runner-up, but he was sure that voters would decisively vote in favour of the SAD-BJP combine and he would win by a margin of over one lakh votes.

A large number of supporters and workers of the SAD-BJP candidate along with an enormous number of vehicles disrupted vehicular traffic from Bhai Bala Chowk (Pakhowal Road crossing) to Bharat Nagar Chowk on Feozepur Road (a national highway) for nearly two hours during the road show of Grewal.

• Graduated from SCD Government College, Ludhiana, and did his LLB from the Law College, Dehradun in 1974.
• Was elected MLA from Ludhiana West segment in 1997 as SAD-BJP candidate and became a Cabinet minister in the government headed by Parkash Singh Badal. Later, served as Adviser to the Chief Minister with Cabinet rank.
