To decrease the pollution levels and to shun the practice of burning of dry leaves and waste generated from the parks of Municipal Corporation, compost pits are being made to recycle the waste.
The Additional Commissioner, Rishipal Singh, while giving the details about this venture said in the last two months, about 50 composite pits were made in and around various parks. In these pits, the waste generated from the parks which include dry leaves and excess grass is kept to prepare manure.
“There is dual benefit of these pits. We will be able to make good compost, which can be used as fertiliser and the plants can be maintained well in parks. Secondly, the pollution levels in city could be decreased to an extent. It is a common practice to burn the dry leaves and waste of parks in open. It causes pollution and other problems related to health. If sufficient number of pits are made in parks in city, the waste can be dumped in these pits and after 3-4 months, we can get good compost”, said Rishipal Singh.
He added there are around 850 parks in the city. Some of these are neglected while many others are being managed by the Park Management Committees. If compost pits are made in most of these parks, we can certainly bring a positive change, said the ADC.
On being asked about the follow-up, the official said that horticulture department is taking care of everything. “I am personally monitoring it so that good quality compost can be made. In another two months, we will start getting manure from these pits”, said Rishipal Singh.
