Ludhiana, September 28

A portion of Pakhowal Road caved in near Sarabha Nagar traffic lights, on Friday. Residents said they have witnessed two cave ins at the same location, but the civic body, instead of carrying proper repair, filled the damaged portion.

The locals witnessed the caved-in portion of the road this morning. After getting the information, the civic body staff reached the spot to repair it. However, questions are being raised over the poor road infrastructure in the city that is to be developed as a Smart City.

Arvind Sharma of Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar said: “When I passed through road, MC employees were filling the caved-in portion. Instead of inspecting it properly, they just did a formality to fill the damaged road portion. Earlier, a portion at the intersection had caved in around a month ago.”

“These cave ins pose a huge threat to commuters’ lives. We don’t know when and where any road will cave in. The MC authorities are responsible for the poor condition of the city roads, as no concrete measures are being taken to avoid such incidents,” he said.

Sources said the officials concerned commonly remain absent whenever any road is constructed or carpeted. Even telecom companies are allowed to install underground wires without any check, they said. The civic body officials have also failed to conduct the survey of old and leaked water supply and sewer pipes in the city.

Executive engineer HS Bhullar could not be contacted. Notably, a portion of the flyover from Jagraon Bridge to Vishwakarma Chowk and a road portion at Mohar Singh Nagar had caved in two days ago. Besides, a road portion along the City Center project site and Ghumar Mandi Road had also caved in recently.
