Digital technologies are transforming agriculture and rural economy. The PAU KIsan App was launched during the Kisan Mela on Thursday, which will address the queries of farmers, equip them with the knowledge about new crop varieties and their production and protection technologies, and provide weather and other agriculture-related advisories from time to time. Presently, farmers can download the app on their android phones. It would soon be made available for iphone users as well. The app, launched by Governor and PAU Chancellor VP Singh Badnore, has been introduced by the Directorate of Extension Education, PAU.
PAU VC Baldev Singh Dhillon called upon farmers to remain in contact with PAU experts through this app.
Over 200 farmers download app on day 1
According to information from PAU authorities, more than 200 farmers had downloaded the app on their android phones by the evening.
“Farmers should keep themselves updated. Advisories issued by agricultural experts are helpful for farmers and if these are available on a mobile app, it is convenient too,” said Surinder Singh, a farmer.
Another farmer Gurbinder Singh said connectivity was empowering, more so if experts’ views and assessments were available easily.
Two more apps launched
Two android-based mobile apps on pig farming and goat farming were also launched during the Pashu Palan Mela at GADVASU. These apps, providing information on goat rearing, pig farming and marketing, can be downloaded from Google Play Store.
Livestock Calendar
With the launch of “Livestock Calendar”, livestock farmers now have a ready reckoner to manage their livestock practices. The “Livestock Calendar” is a comprehensive tool carrying monthly animal husbandry operations for dairy, pig, goat, fish and poultry farming, including fodder-related practices. “It is a kind of universal calendar covering all operations for 12 months of the year. It is a handy tool for farmers, leading to better livestock management. Once purchased, it can guide and help a farmer for years, said Dr Harish Kumar Verma, Director of Extension Education, GADVASU.
