To make sure that doctors renew their membership timely, the Punjab Medical Council (PMC) has waived the mandatory credit hours of Continuous Medical Education (CME). The credit hours have been waived till March 31 so that all members can renew their membership.

According to the rules, 50 credit CME hours are compulsory for the renewal of PMC membership.

According to the sources, during the last meeting, it was seen that many members have failed to get their membership renewed. Keeping this in view, the credit hours for CME were exempted.

Dr Karamvir Goyal, a member of the PMC from Ludhiana said this was the one-time exemption that has been given to the PMC members.

“For renewal of membership of PMC, one requires 50 CME credit hours. It has been observed that many members have failed to renew their membership till now. Keeping in view the deadline of March 31, the CME credit hours have been waived off to ensure that all the members can get their membership renewed,” said Dr Goyal.

One of the medical practitioners from the city appreciated the move and said it was a welcome move of the PMC. “Sometimes due to bush routines one fails to fulfill the condition of 50 credit points. Once the membership of all the members is renewed, they can be cautious next time,” he said.

Meanwhile, a lot of controversy has already been raised over the CMEs as few are tailor made by pharmaceutical companies to market and promote their own products is a different side to the issue.

However, it had already been decided in 2017 that there was no need to collect the necessary 50 credit hours for senior citizens for renewal of registration after the age of 65 years of Registered Medical Practitioners.
