The SSG, consisting personnel trained in man-to-man combat, will be equipped with the latest weapons, which are being used by special weapon and tactic (SWAT) team of the Punjab Police.

“First, people should not panic about any terror attack. Second, the city police are prepared to give a befitting replay to such elements,” said the new Commissioner of Police, Paramraj Singh Umranangal.

He said in view of Independence Day, security had been beefed up in different parts of the city. “Special search operations are being conducted at malls. We have deployed police personnel along with the private staff to step up security,” said Umranangal.

He said they wanted to instil fear of the police among anti-social elements.

Women Cell

“From now onwards, complaints made to Women Cell will be investigated by high rank officers. No one will be unnecessarily harassed,” said Umranangal.

Rising cases of snatching

“On Saturday, three incidents of snatching took place near CMC Chowk.  We have identified the suspects and they will be behind bars soon. We will act tough against snatchers. Offences of triple riding on motorcycles and riding vehicles without number plates will be sternly dealt with,” said Umranangal.

Zero tolerance to corruption

Umranangal said there would be zero tolerance to corrupt practices adopted by any policeman. He admitted that politicians were an integral part of the democratic system but no one would be allowed to influence the functioning of the police.
