Whenever the results of a Punjab School Education Board examination are to be declared, all eyes turn expectantly towards RS Model Senior Secondary School, Shastri Nagar. The beats of dhol and roars of successful students amid celebrations are witnessed year after year at the school as the school has been consistent in producing toppers in the board examinations. The school has six students in the top 10 ranks and a total of 26 students on the merit list for the Class XII examination.

“This success is what inspires our students to work hard to be part of such celebrations the next year,” said a teacher, shouting above the beats of dhol and noises of celebrations. “And we teachers work hard to inspire and create more such success stories,” she added.

“A culture of success has been developed in the school, which is leading to success of students year after year,” Principal of the school ML Kalra, who was dancing along the toppers and their parents, said.

Kalra said the school did not have very good results prior to the nineties. “So, we went to a school in Jalandhar to study their teaching techniques and to understand reasons behind their good results. We implemented those methods in our school,” he said.

A lot depends on the educational approach of the administrator of a school who plays a key role in maintaining the quality of teaching, inspiring faculty and students to give their best.

Most of the students, who have secure top marks, have attributed their success to teachers. “It is because of the guidance of teachers that I was able to make a mark,” said the state topper from the school, Darshveer Kaur Kalsi. “I would just say that one should hold the hand of one’s teacher and study meticulously.”

Amanjot Kaur, who scored the fourth rank, said teachers go out of the way to help students cover the syllabi if the latter have to take part in sports events or other extracurricular activities,” she said.

“Our teachers don’t allow the use of help books. They provide us notes. They pay close attention to the performance of all students,” said another student.
