Progressive pig farmers’ aim at livestock revolution

A monthly meeting of Progressive Pig Farmers’ Association (PPFA) was held at Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University, where 55 farmers from every corner of Punjab participated. Dr Satinderpal Singh from Punjab Veterinary Vaccine Institute, Ludhiana, detailed about the vaccines produced by the institute for livestock. He explained about the swine fever disease, its prevention through vaccine, vaccine availability, its transport and demonstrated the method to inject the vaccine.
Dr Kulvinder Singh Sandhu from veterinary extension department of the university shared his research finding on piglets weaning. Both expert lectures were highly appreciated by farmers.
Dr JPS Gill, Director Research, GADVASU, revealed that pig farming was gaining all-time high popularity in the state overcoming the social taboo attached with this farming. He said the university strives to bring livestock revolution viz dairy, poultry, piggery, goat etc. for all section of farmers — landless, small to large — through various modus operandi.
Dr SK Kansal, head, department of veterinary extension, said different farmers’ associations such as pig, goat, fish were working under the aegis of the university. Dr Jaswinder Singh and Dr Bilawal Singh, coordinators, Progressive Pig Farmers’ Association, said the university was regularly providing technical backup to pig farmers by conducting the monthly meeting of association on every last Thursday of the month.
Sukhwinder Singh Grewal, president, PPFA, briefed the achievements of the association to the gathering and also highlighted certain issues such as establishing the pork processing unit, enhanced availability of vaccine, which needs immediate attention of the controlling authority and policy makers. He requested all pig framers of Punjab to unite under this one platform i.e. Pig Farmers’ Association to bring the Pink Revolution in the state.
