The Punjab School Education Board (PSEB) has taken a strict note of some schools admitting students on dummy seats in Class XI and XII.

Students from medical and non-medical stream take ‘dummy’ admission in a school. Instead of going to school, they attend coaching classes to prepare for the entrance examination in engineering and medical fields for higher education.

This has become a rampant practice wherein schools are also involved in corruption and only take fee for marking fake attendance of students.

Besides taking admission in institutes running entrance test courses in the city, students also go to Chandigarh and Delhi to attend coaching classes without bothering about the school and attendance.

After taking note of the problem, the PSEB has directed schools not to allow such practice. In a letter issued by the board to all affiliated schools, including government and private, it has been mentioned that if any institution shows students present in a ‘wrong manner’, then it is violating affiliation rules.

The board has instructed all heads to ensure attendance of students in schools. In case any school is found indulging in the wrong practice, then action will be taken against it according to affiliation bylaws.

While speaking about the practice, one of the faculty members of a coaching institute, on the condition of anonymity, admitted that some students took admission in the institute and opted for dummy seats in schools simultaneously.

“They come here and take coaching. As much of the course outline overlaps with Class XI and XII academic syllabus, students don’t face any problems while taking exams. So practically speaking, they get more time to prepare for the competitive exams,” he said.
