Ludhiana, September 27
To prevent accidents, Police Commissioner (CP) Rakesh Agrawal has imposed restrictions on the entry of heavy vehicles in the city area during night hours.
The orders issued by the top cop state: “Ludhiana is the industrial hub where several industries exist. Due to this, there is huge movement of heavy, medium and light commercial vehicles. Hence risk of road mishap increases. Strict steps have to be taken to prevent road accidents and to safeguard the lives of city residents.”
“I, being the Police Commissioner, use the power vested in me under Section 144 of the CrPc to impose complete restrictions on the entry of heavy commercial vehicles in the city area from 8 am to 10.30 pm. The entry of medium and light commercial vehicles is allowed from 12 pm to 5 pm in the city limits. This order will remain in force for the coming two months,” CP order further states.
Sources said, “If any such commercial vehicle is found plying on the city roads during the non-permitted hours, it could be challaned and even impounded by the police.”
It is, however, learnt that despite orders of the CP heavy vehicles continue to ply on city roads, which not only cause huge traffic jams, but also road accidents. Even the old city area, which has congested markets, witnesses entry of heavy vehicles during the day time every day.
