Sahnewal, February 7
Tempers flared as the body of Gurpreet Kaur, a young bank employee who was crushed under the wheels of a truck yesterday morning, was cremated today.
Frustration was writ large on the faces of residents as they took out a candle march late this evening on the main market road. They demanded a complete ban over the entry of big vehicles in Sahnewal.
Members of various unions of Sahnewal, along with shopkeepers and residents, took out a candle march and reached the Sahnewal Chowk. They said big vehicles should be stopped from entering the town as it had caused several tragedies.
“The traffic police seem to have closed their eyes and ears towards the issue which requires their attention. A written warning restricting the entry of heavy vehicles inside the town is all what the department has done till date,” lamented a resident.
“We have been facing this problem for more than a year now. We have informed the authorities concerned several times, but to no avail. Rather than imposing stringent check at the entry point, the traffic police remain busy in clearing the rush at the chowk,” said a shopkeeper.
“A number of major and minor accidents have taken place due to the uncouth entry of the big vehicles, which seldom bother about the life of a commuter. The authorities should wake up from their slumber as early as possible,” said an irritated commuter.
Gurdev Singh, ACP Traffic, said, “I have deputed a special officer at the place to check the vehicles obstructing the free flow of traffic at the Sahnewal Chowk. We are registering FIRs against the defaulters.”
