On the basis of emerging winners in the Punjab State Schools Handball Championship (boys U-17) held at Fatehgarh Sahib, last year, teams from the Sports Authority of India (SAI) Training Centre in the city have been given direct entry into the championship to be held at Faridkot from September 24 to 27 this year.
The centre incharge, Harbans Singh, said out of the 12 members of the SAI team nine players were from Nav Bharti Public School and three from Government Model Senior Secondary School, Cemetery Road, Civil Lines branch.
The members of the SAI unit, Ludhiana, are Mandeep, Ram Pal, Jasbir, Monu, Parveen, Vikas, Rohit, Shakti Bhoora and Satinder, all from Nav Bharti Public School. Gurlal Singh, Abhishek and Gurbans Pal Singh from Government Model School.
Four trainees out of these players — Ram Pal, Mandeep, Rohit and Shakti Bhoora — had already participated in different national handball tournaments held recently.
“With a rich experience of competition exposure, trainees of the SAI unit, Ludhiana, have good chance to bag top honours in the forthcoming championship slated to be held at Faridkot,” said Harbans.
Meanwhile, two trainees from this centre, Vikas and Sikander, have been selected to take part in the Sub-Junior Handball Championship (U-15) to be held from September 24 to 29 at Hisar in Haryana.
