Ludhiana, January 3
Rory Guinness, the great grandson of Guinness World Records founder Rupert Guinness was in the city with his Ludhiana-based father-in-law Dr Yogendar Nath Tidu Maini.
He visited Maini’s ancestral house situated in the old city near Sangla Wala Shivalya.
Rory, who is the scion of famed brewing dynasty and Iveagh Trust Board member, was all praise for Punjabi food ‘Amritsari Kulcha’.
“I love Amritsari Kulcha. It’s yummy. The first thing I ask for when I visit Punjab is this food. Yes, it will remain my favourite throughout my life. I will come again and again to relish it,” Rory said.
Apart from Punjabi food, his love started increasing for Punjab when he got married to Punjabi girl Mira.
Rory’s family owns Elveden Hall, a 22,000-acre estate in England. It is the same house, in which Maharaja Duleep Singh, the last Maharaja of Punjab, lived. The Maharaja’s last resting place is at Elveden Hall. Rory Guinness is married to Mira, who is Dr Yogindar Nath Tidu Maini and Meta Maini’s daughter.
Rory’s children Aoife Guinness, Beatrice Guinness and Aidan Guinness accompanied him.
“It is fantastic to see where the Maini dynasty started. I am going to ask the Mainis if the Guinness clan can establish its Indian spiritual home here in Ludhiana,” said Rory.
Rory’s wife Mira said: “I will ensure that Ludhiana has a special place in the hearts of our children. The Guinness family has been caring for the poorer sections of the community in Dublin, Ireland for many generations and now, Dr Maini wants to help them in Ludhiana,” she said.
“My grandfather left Ludhiana in 1896 for East Africa and at present, my nephew stays at this house named ‘Africa House’. Now, it is my family’s spiritual home in India and I am keen to show it to the next generation, due to which I have come here with my son-in-law Rory Guinness and his family,” Tidu Maini said. Maini is an entrepreneur and professional, who migrated in the early 20th Century to Africa and Europe.
Tidu Maini himself has had a stellar international corporate career, while his elder brother Ravinder Nath Maini is one of the world’s foremost authority and doctor on rheumatology. He is also the winner of Lasker Award and the Fothergillian Award. Yoginder and Ravinder’s father, Amar Maini, was a noted civil servant in Uganda.
Notably, Dr Maini has been extending financial help to the Bharti Mittal Foundation with an aim to help the poor and needy children in their studies.
