Garbage dumps dot the city as its disposal is an issue that is yet to be addressed. Despite much hype, garbage segregation (biodegradable, non-biodegradable and e-waste) remains on paper only. Besides burning of garbage/leaves is a common problem across the city. Vacant plots are filled with garbage, waste plastic and polythene, which is non-biodegradable.

No wonder, the city has slipped to the 140 rank in the Swachh Survekshan report. Meanwhile, the Municipal Corporation (MC) and other authorities concerned are busy passing the buck.

A sincere and concerted effort is required to keep the city clean. Ludhiana, the industrial hub, which is among the most polluted cities of the country, may slide down further on the swachhta (cleanliness) scale if immediate remedial steps are not taken. This is a distinction that none of us, including the MC authorities, wants.
