Simranjit Kaur does Punjab proud

Simranjit Kaur from Chakar village in Ludhiana district has done Punjab proud winning top honours in an international boxing competition.

Simranjit along with six-time world champion Mary Kom represented the country in the 23rd President’s Cup Boxing Tournament at Labuan Baju city in Indonesia wherein the Indian pugilists finished their campaign with nine medals, including seven gold medals.

Competing in below the 60-kg weight group, Simranjit decimated the Asian Games bronze medallist, Hasanah Huwatun, in the final from host country, Indonesia. Simranjit won the verdict 5-0 annex gold medal.

Earlier, Simranjit had won bronze medal in the last edition of the World Boxing Championship. A trainee of the Sher-e-Punjab Academy, Chakar, she also secured silver medal in the Asian Boxing Championship at Bangkok.

Simranjit is the second girl trainee from this academy to win accolades at the international-level competition. Mandeep Kaur Sandhu was the first one to bring glory, winning gold medal in the Junior World Boxing Championship.

Rana Gurmit Singh Sodhi, Punjab Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports, hailed Simranjit for her victory in an overseas tournament. He congratulated the star pugilist and her mother Rajpal Kaur on this outstanding achievement.

This feat would motivate others to take part in sports and mark a niche for their families and the state, he said.
