LUDHIANA: On the second and penultimate day of the 41st Abey Oswal Senior Punjab Swimming and Water-Polo Championship, six more meet records, three each in men and women sections, were rewritten on Saturday. The three-day championship is being conducted by the District Swimming Association under the aegis of the Punjab Swimming Association with the help of Oswal Greentech Limited here at the Punjab Agricultural University swimming pool. Local swimmer Akashdeep Singh, who had established a new record in the 200-metre backstroke event on Friday, added two more new records to his name on Saturday. In the 400-metre individual medley, Akashdeep clocked 5:09:10 minutes to set a new record. The previous record of 5:19:31 minutes existed in the name of Sandeep Kumar from Jalandhar. Akashdeep created his third meet record in the competition, when he took 29:66 seconds to put to shade the record of 29: 85 seconds set by Abhimanyu Tewari of Patiala in 2007 in the 50-metre backstroke event. In the 50-metre butterfly stroke, Tejinder Singh of Faridkot clocked 26: 49 seconds to establish a new meet record. The earlier record of 28: 21 seconds was set by Aman Ghai of Jalandhar. Women swimmers, too, did not lag behind as they gave a matching performance, creating three new meet records. In the 50-metre freestyle event, Deepali Attri of Sangrur stamped her supremacy and took 30: 15 seconds to put to eclipse the existing record of 30: 90 second set by Ishpreet Kaur of Ludhiana. In the gruelling 1,500-metre freestyle event, Chetanya Singh of Patiala finished well ahead of others and created a new meet record. She clocked 21: 31:42 minutes to erase the previous record of 22: 41:17 minutes set by Arshpreet Kaur of Ludhiana in 2009. Deepali Attri established second individual record, as she clocked 35: 10 seconds to complete the 50-metre backstroke event against the existing record of 36: 05 seconds set by Suhapanpreet Kaur of Ludhiana in 2009. — Anil Datt
