Smog puts brakes on train speed

The thick blanket of smog engulfing the entire region is not only wreaking havoc on the health of the residents but it has also disrupted road and rail traffic. A large number of long-route trains are running late by several hours due to speed regulations necessitated by poor visibility, especially during early and late hours.

According to railway officials, 12491 Barauni-Jammu Tawi Maudhwaj Express was delayed by 13.50 hours, 18101 Tatanagar-Jammu Tawi Express was running late by almost nine hours, 04941 Lucknow-Mata Viashno Devi-Katra Express by 7.30 hrs, 15209 Saharsa-Amritsar Jansewa Express by 6.40 hrs, 13005 Howrah-Amritsar Mail by 4.25 hrs and 15707 Katihar-Amritsar Amarapali Express by 4 hrs.

Among other trains running behind schedule were 14650 Amritsar-Jaynagar Saryu-Yamuna Express (3.55 hrs), 15210 Amritsar-Saharsa Jansewa Express (3.10 hrs), 12317 Sealdah-Amritsar Akal Takht Express (3.40 hrs), 12203 Saharsa-Amritsar Garib Rath (2.20 hrs) and 12715 Nanded-Amritsar Sachkhand Express (2.15 hrs).

Besides, several other trains, including 13049 Howrah-Amritsar Express, 12919 Indore-Jammu Tawi Malwa Express, 14037 Delhi-Pathankot Express, 22679 Yashwantpur-Mata Vaishno Devi Premium Express and 11057 Mumbai CST-Amritsar Express were running late by more than an hour to two hours.

While the passengers were suffering inconvenience due to late running of trains, the railway officials justified the speed regulation during poor visibility in the interest of passenger safety. They advised the travelling public to check exact time of arrival and departure of their respective trains from railway enquiry.
