The Sports Authority of India (SAI) Training Centre, Ludhiana, distributed sport kits to its trainees today.
The kits worth Rs 6 lakh were given to 122 trainees enrolled under the day-boarding as well as residential scheme as per the SAI norms.
Veteran athlete Nirmal Singh Grewal, a medallist in the Tehran Asian Games-1974 was the chief guest of the function organised to hand over the kits to the trainees.
Grewal said the government was providing all facilities to budding players under different sports promotion schemes and they should utilise the same to the optimum to achieve the desired results. Parents should encourage their wards to take an active part in competitive sports of their choice, he said.
“Sports is not fun or entertainment. It is an excellent way of pursuing a career and also making oneself physically fit to minimise health problems,” Grewal said.
Harbans Singh, in-charge of the training centre, said the kit, worth Rs 5,000, was given to players annually. The kit comprised track suit, shoes, T-shirts, towel, socks and a kit bag.
Giving details, he said kits were given to trainees, which include 10 athletes, 22 handball players, 27 judo players, 20 weightlifters, 10 table tennis players, 27 trainees at the extension centre, Akhara, Amritsar and six athletes at the extension centre, Tarn Taran. These included international players namely Sanjay, Jatin and Bableen Kaur (all judokas) and handball player Navdeep.
