A man was killed and six persons were injured when three vehicles collided near Akbarpur Chhanna on the Ludhiana-Malerkotla road, near here, last night. A stray cow that abruptly came in front of a truck led to the accident.

The casualties could have been higher had the police and passersby not undertaken rescue operations promptly and shifted the injured to hospitals.

A stray cow abruptly came on the highway, forcing a truck coming from the Malerkotla side cross the divider. The truck then collided with a car and a mini-truck coming from the opposite side.

The deceased has been identified as Nasir Juberi (30) of Jorrian Mohalla, Malerkotla, who was driving the car. Parvej of New Sabji Mandi, Malerkotla, Mohammad Javed of the Haider Sheikh area in Malerkotla, Mohammad Jahid of Chhati Gali in Malerkotla, Mohammad Nasim and Shamshad of Mohalla Hajjan Wala, Malerkotla, were severely injured.

The SHO of the Sadar police station, HP Singh, said a truck coming from the Malerkotla side collided with another truck and a Swift car coming from the opposite side on the Ludhiana-Malerkotla road near Akbarpur Chhanna at about 10 pm on Wednesday.

The driver lost control over his truck after it collided with a cow that abruptly came on the road. The vehicle crossed the divider and collided with the two vehicles coming from the opposite side.

Rescuers had to take the help of other vehicles to separate the intermingled remains of the vhicles. The body of the deceased and the injured were recovered from the damaged vehicles with great difficulty. The injured were shifted to hospitals at Ludhiana and Malerkotla.
