Ludhiana, November 4
After penning down poem on stubble burning, Dr RK Gupta, Senior Soil Chemist from the Department of Soil Science, Punjab Agricultural University (PAU), has now written a poem on proper utilisation of cow dung.
Dr Gupta appeals to convert dung into gas which could be used for cooking in rural households.
“It will save huge cost of wood. From gas, electricity can be produced. The gas can also be used to run a diesel engine. As a result, 35 per cent diesel can be saved,” said Dr Gupta.
Processing the dung in biogas plant helps in saving nutrients, improving soil health, reducing use of fertilisers, reducing burden of weeds and increasing crop productivity.
He has also appealed the farmers to stop dumping cow dung on the outter periphery of their village and avoid making dung cakes as burning it affects eyes and lungs. Dr Gupta in his poem advises farmers to adopt smokeless chullahs and solar cookers as it would help in saving funds, energy and time.
