A special welfare meet was organised for veer naaris (war widows) by the Indian Army’s Vajra Air Defence Brigade here on Sunday.

The annual event aims at reaching out to the veer naaris and war widows provide maximum assistance in terms of resolving pension anomalies, benefits, entitlements and placements of wards.

Simmi Dutta, zonal president, Vajra Corps Army Wives’ Welfare Association, was the chief guest at the event. Brigadier Manish Arora, Station Commander, Ludhiana Military Station, highlighted that this special annual welfare meet facilitates in maintaining contact with the kith and kin of valiant heroes of the Indian Army and provides a single platform to resolve their problems.

More than 700 persons, including 100 veer naaris, 275 widows of veterans and their dependents, numerous representatives of the Army and civil administrative agencies, Zila Sainik Board, Veterans Sahayata Kendra, Army placement node and the state police attended the special welfare meet.

A medical camp was also organised during the event, in which specialist doctors from the Army and civil hospitals participated.

Apart from financial assistance to the needy, medical aid in terms of free medicines, eye check-up, wheelchairs, hearing aids, lumbar belts, knee caps, cervical collars and walking sticks were also provided.

Pursuant to the previous veer naari meet in January 2018, approximately Rs1.1 crore was disbursed, while pension cases were resolved and a sum of Rs26 lakh was distributed as part of the Assured Decent Last Rites Scheme (ADLRS).

Students from Vajra Vayu Rakshak Primary School, Kundan Vidya Mandir and Sat Paul Mittal School presented a cultural programme in honour of veer naaris and widows of veterans. Sikh LI Pipe band gave a mesmerising performance after a unique welcome by the aero models flying above.

Rs 1.1 cr disbursed
