Indian Railways men’s team proved its superiority by emerging champions in the World Railways Volleyball Championship held in Bulgaria. Gurjot Singh, who accompanied the team as coach, informed over the phone that the Indian men gave a sterling performance to wrap up the title in this prestigious competition held from August 24 to 30.
Gurjot Singh, posted at Ludhiana under the Railways Ferozepur Division as reservation supervisor, said the Indian contingent came out triumphant without facing much resistance.
In the pool matches, India outplayed France 3-0 and then blanked Czech Republic in similar fashion (3-0) to storm into the knockout phase wherein also they stamped their authenticity to fetch the gold medal.
In the quarterfinal, India outperformed Germany 3-0 and in the semifinals, they edged out Russia 3-0 to set up the title clash with Belarus. In the final, India overpowered their opponents 3-1 to lift the winners’ trophy.
Lakhbir Singh of Chandigarh was the lone Punjab player figured in the team and played a major role in this victory. — OC
