Work begins to strengthen dhusi bundh

In order to avoid flooding due to incessant rain, the Drainage Department has been strengthening Dhusi bundh on Sutlej River at eight locations in the district.

The department concerned has been placing sand bags and boulders in wire crates to avoid soil erosion.

According to information, Sutlej River has witnessed rise in water level in the last couple of days. The officials of the district administration and the Drainage Department were keeping 24x7 vigil in the area.

Sub-Divisional Officer Gurtej Singh Garcha said, “The department is strengthening the bundh at eight spots. We keep constant check on the water level in the river. The situation is normal.”

He said the work was vunderway at different points, including Bholewal Jadid, Kasabad, Mattewara, Maniyewal, Khaira Bet, Shergarh, Dhullewal and Ghumana.

A resident of Bholewal Jadid said, “Water level increased in the river during the last few days. Fields and residential areas are located near the bundh.”

Jaswinder Singh, a resident of Ladhowal said, “I came to check the water level in the river. Flow of water is fast. Weed can also be seen floating in the river. Last year, the the river had swollen. I think the government should strengthen river banks at other locations too.”

Ludhiana Deputy Commissioner Pradeep Kumar Agrawal said water flow is normal and they were keeping close watch on the river.

The administration has already setup 24x7 flood control room at district and sub-division and tehsil levels.
