District Youth-Parliament Festival, 2019, was held at SCD Government College today. It was organised in collaboration with the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, Government of India.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi had given a clarion call to the youth of the country to be the voice of new India and become a part of policy making so that a positive change can be brought about in Indian politics.
The Principal, Dr Dharam Singh Sandhu, welcomed the participants from Moga and Ludhiana districts. He said this initiative of the government would pave the way for the future leaders of the country. Hence, they must all present their views on the various topics in a conscious manner. He also congratulated the teachers who were involved in organising this festival.
The jury members who evaluated the participants included Sandeep Kapoor, advocate; Jagpal Singh, Assistant Director Youth Services, Ludhiana; Jagdish Singh, Assistant Director Youth Services, Moga; Prof Harjit Singh Rattan, literary artist; Rashmeet Kaur, District Youth Coordinator, Nehru Sidhant Kendra; and Dr Harbans Singh, Head Department of Geography.
The screening of this competition was carried out in two steps, digital and walk-in. The digital process continued from January 12 to 18 where the participants registered themselves on the website Innovate.mygov.in/youth-parliament and the walk-in process was held from January 17 to 19.
A total of 89 candidates were selected for participation in the district youth parliament. The candidates should be between 18 to 25 years of age. In this competition, the number of girls was more than that of the boys. The participants were evaluated on their articulation, content knowledge and clarity of thought, each criterion carrying 30 marks each.
A panel of best speakers was selected who will now participate in National Youth Parliament.
The final winner will be selected as the speaker of National Youth Parliament and will be deputed as delegate to National Youth Parliament. The three best speakers will be awarded Rs 2 lakh, Rs1.5 lakh and Rs 1 lakh respectively. The participants presented their views on various topics such as climate change, economic offenders, Khelo India, etc.
