Chandigarh, December 25
The Municipal Corporation has fixed a new target for the implementation of the solid waste management policy.
Sources said the UT Administration had amended the policy after the recommendation of a committee.
Under the amended policy, the target dates have been advanced by a year. Now, the work of door-to-door collection of segregated waste and its transportation in covered vehicles will start by December 31 this year. Besides, separate storage, collection and transportation of construction and demolition waste will also be completed by December 31 this year.
Bioremediation or capping of old and abandoned dump site will now be completed in two years instead of five years as fixed earlier.
Meanwhile, the MC has also proposed to reduce the garbage collection charges to be levied on residents. As per the new proposal, the charge for 10 marla houses has been fixed at Rs 200 a month instead of Rs 250 proposed earlier. The charge for houses measuring two kanals or more, however, has gone up to Rs 300 a month from Rs 250.
The new rates will be implemented once the UT Administration gives the approval.
