The entire merger of the associate banks and Mahila Bank into the SBI was completed smoothly and thereby, the State Bank of India (SBI) has become one of the leading banks globally, said DT Franco, president, All India State Bank Officers’ Federation (AISBOF), on the 11th Triennial General Council of State Bank of India (SBI) Officers’ Association, Chandigarh circle at the Guru Teg Bahadur Hall of Punjabi University, Patiala.

Over 2,500 bank officers participated in the day-long event. The council was inaugurated by Anil Kishora, Deputy Managing Director, State Bank of India , in the presence of Franco.

Meanwhile, Franco said the entire banking industry was going through a challenging time.

He said the All India Bank Officers’ Confederation (AIBOC) has been opposing the move of the Central Government through the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) to slap an additional burden of Aadhaar enrolment on selected branches of public sector banks right from its inception.

He further said in the past three years alone, banks had written off Rs 2,41,000 crore as informed in the Parliament. Hence, it is high time, the Centre and the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) should intervene and nationalise private sector banks so that the banking sector plays a vital role in commanding heights of the economy.
