Why would former India captain MS Dhoni need a monthly allowance of Rs 175 to buy newspapers or spend on education? It seems incredible, because Dhoni is a multi-millionaire several times over, but this was the sum allotted to him by India Cements when the company hired him as Vice-president (Marketing) in Chennai five years ago.
The details of Dhoni’s salary and benefits were leaked by former IPL chairman Lalit Modi online. Modi has been on the run for seven years, evading Indian law agencies. But he questioned the motive behind India Cements hiring Dhoni in the light of the fact that Dhoni earns, in the words of Modi, “100s of crore a year”.
43,000 per month
According to the appointment letter, Dhoni was to be given a basic pay of Rs 43,000 per month, along with a dearness allowance of Rs 21,970 and a special pay of Rs 20,000. He was also entitled to Rs 20,400 as house rent allowance, which was to be raised by Rs 8,400 if he was in Chennai and Rs 8,000 if he was based elsewhere.
The letter also mentions a special allowance of Rs 60,000 per month, apart from education/newspaper expenses of Rs 175 per month. It also promises Dhoni that he would be “eligible for reimbursement for electricity, water and cooking gas charges”.
