A Holstein Friesian cow from Noorpur Hakima village in Moga district today set a new record by producing 66.713-kg milk in a day at a milking competition held on the penultimate day of the 8th National Livestock Championship here.
The same cow had set the national record of 66 litre milk a day at Jagraon on December 7 last year.
Harpreet, cow owner, and his brother Harmanpreet Singh often take their cattle to such fairs and have won several awards.
Harpreet’s other cows got second and seventh position in the same category of the competition today. The national record holder cow won a cash prize of Rs 1.5 lakh from the department of animal husbandry.
An elated Harpreet Singh, who is a graduate, said, “This cow is just like our family member and has made us proud. We are into dairy farming for the past about 10 years and have 140 cows of various breeds which produce 2,000 litres of milk a day.”
Last year, during the national livestock championship, the national record (61.88 kg of milk) was set by the cow of Daljit Singh of Ludhiana, which had yielded 61.88 kg milk in a day.
Competitions were also held for different breeds of milch cattle drawn from Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan and Gujarat.
