Jammu, April 24
The state government has announced that the prestigious Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Jammu, will function from the Government College of Engineering and Technology (GCET), Marjali, Chak Bhalwal, till the land is acquired for the same. But people raise question on the move as the engineering college lacks facilities and infrastructure.
Nearly 50 per cent of lecturers engaged in the GCET are working on the ad hoc basis, which has affected the academic performance of the institution. The engineering college was established in 1994 and lacks basic infrastructure. The government should first improve its condition and than think of IIT. — Atul Gupta, private firm employee
The GCET was established in 1994 on the old campus of the University of Jammu on the model of erstwhile Regional Engineering College in Srinagar and was supposed to be developed as one of the premier technical college in the country. — Shivali Vaid, student
J&K needs good engineering and management colleges, but those already functional should get attention first. Hundreds of students are studying engineering from GCET, but they face problems due to lack of facilities. The IIT will further burden the college, facing manpower and other infrastructural shortages. — Manpreet Singh, businessman
So much is announced for Jammu, be it AIIMS or IIT, but the problem is that it is only done for political reasons. Several of the projects are still incomplete. We expect that the present BJP-PDP government will do justice with the region. — Amanpreet, housewife
