Rajouri: The arterial road communication to Kashmir via Mughal Road, which was closed due to heavy snowfall for more than a month, was thrown open to one-way traffic on Sunday. The historic Mughal Road connects Kashmir with Rajouri-Poonch district and is also the shortest route to reach Jammu also. The road was thrown open by Ch Mohd Yasin, Deputy Commissioner, Shopian, who also visited the Peer Gali, the highest point (11,450 ft) on this road. The vehicular movement on this road will give a sigh of relief to locals, especially the trader community from both regions. “This road not only gives fillip to economic activity, but has a significant social impact in all areas that are connected by this vital road connectivity,” said Mohd Yasin. The authorities looking after the Mughal road have been directed to fast-track the repairs and restoration of the damaged road stretches as early as possible, he added. “Today vehicles from the Kashmir side were allowed to move on the Mughal road. Only a few vehicles left for Shopian,” said Javed Iqbal , SDPO, Surankot. — OC
