2 IIT Guwahati students held on molestation charge

Two male students of Indian Institute of Technology, Guwahati (IIT-G) were arrested on Wednesday following charges of molestation filed by a girl student of Gauhati University. 

The police have slapped Section 354 of the IPC against them.

The incident had allegedly taken place on the night of February 3 and the victim filed an FIR with the North Guwahati police station on Tuesday.

She had specifically named two students of IIT-G and accused the duo of spiking her fruit juice after which she alleged molestation.

“The two IIT-G students were picked up on Tuesday itself, but arrested only on Wednesday after the girl made a detailed statement before a lady magistrate. We have also registered a case and arrested the two students under Section 354 of the IPC,” Kamrup SP, Parthasarathi Mahanta said.

The two IIT-G students are identified as Kunal Kumbhkar and Ajay Dey.

The police official said the complainant girl was a student of Gauhati University Institute of Science & Technology (GUIST), who had gone to attend the annual Alcheringa festival at IIT-G on February 3, and was allegedly drugged and molested by the two male students after the festival was over late that night.

The police official informed that the girl, a hosteller, had known the two IIT-G students through social media and had apparently gone to the IIT-G campus at the invitation of the two students.

The IIT-G campus, located at north Guwahati across the Brahmaputra is about four km away from the Gauhati University campus.

The police are trying to ascertain why the girl student stayed back till so late in the night after the festival was over.
