Relatives of the Uphaar fire tragedy victims break down during a prayer meeting near the cinema hall on the 20th anniversary of the incident, in New Delhi on Tuesday. On June 13, 1997, halfway through the screening of Border, a fire broke out in Green Park area cinema, in which 59 people died of asphyxia, while over 100 got injured in stampede.

Earlier this year, the Supreme Court directed Gopal Ansal, owner of the theatre, to serve a year’s jail term while his elder brother, Sushil Ansal, got relief with the prison term already undergone by him. The Home Ministry is examining a mercy petition of Gopal Ansal. It has sought opinion of ministries concerned before conveying its decision to the President. PTI
