Women’s rights activist Trupti Desai, head of the Rangrani Bhumata Brigade, entered the Haji Ali Dargah this morning under police protection and offered prayers.

She later warned trustees of the dargah that she would launch a stir in 15 days if women were not permitted up to the sanctum sanctorum.

Desai, who was not allowed to offer prayers at the shrine last month, went to the dargah, located in the Arabian Sea and accessible only during low tide, along with her supporters. The trustees said they would not heed to Desai’s demands. “We did not stop her since she came like any other devotee,” Sohail Khandwani, trustee of the dargah, said. Desai stood four ft away from the mazaar like other women devotees, Khandwani added.
