Kolkata: Calcutta University on Thursday conferred an honorary D Litt on West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee in recognition of her social service, amid a PIL in a high court challenging the varsity’s decision. The hearing on the PIL remained inconclusive on Thursday and the plea would be taken up by the courton Friday. Petitioner Ranjugopal Mukherjee, a former university professor, claimed the move to honour the CM was arbitrary and opaque. The CM, later, wrote on Facebook, “I attended the convocation ceremony of Calcutta University at Nazrul Mancha today. As an alumna, it was indeed a proud moment for me.” Mamata, it may be noted, has been earlier accused of claiming a fake PhD from a non-existent foreign university. TNS
