Asia’s biggest data centre is set to open at Sawantwadi in Maharashtra’s Sindhudurg district.
According to state government sources, the data centre costing Rs 5,000 crore will be set up by a private company, Streamcloud, belonging to the Streamcast group. The data centre will be linked with another one in Malta.
”Both the data centres will be connected by an undersea cable,” Maharashtra’s Tourism Minister Jaykumar Rawal told reporters at an event where Malta’s Tourism and Cultural Minister Konrad Mizzi was also present.
According to sources, the data centre will be spread over a 12-acre land in Sawantwadi. The town, which lies on the Mumbai-Goa highway, is presently known for its traditional wooden toys.
“Not only will we deliver the most powerful computer data centre but also see its preservation as an ‘area of outstanding beauty’ as one of our core drivers to ensure we leave a positive lasting impression,” Streamcloud’s chief operating officer Mark Aldridge said at the ground-breaking ceremony for the project last June.
Sindhudurg district is one of the greenest districts in Maharashtra and the state government said it was keen on non-polluting industries like the data centre to come up here.
Maharashtra government officials said the future was bright for data centres located in India with the central government insisting that technology companies store data of their customers within the country.
