Chandigarh, September 22
A Roopnagar resident was sentenced to one-year rigorous imprisonment (RI) in a cheque-bounce case of Rs 20 lakh. He was also ordered to refund the amount to a complainant as compensation within a period of one month.
As per Sector 34 resident Gurmit Singh Haddy’s complaint, Manpreet Singh had to pay him Rs 20 lakh. The complainant lives abroad and the accused issued him a cheque dated June 16, 2012, for the said amount drawn on Punjab and Sind Bank, Roopnagar branch.
When the cheque was deposited it bounced due to insufficient funds. The complainant later sent a legal notice to the accused demanding payment of cheque amount. But he failed to pay within the stipulated period of 15 days.
“....this court is of considered opinion that the convict has committed a serious offence by deliberately failing in discharge of his economic liability and has failed to ensure the payment of cheques drawn by him,” observed Judicial Magistrate, First Class, Baljinder Kaur. — TNS
