CCEA approves upgrade of 24 dist hospitals as colleges

The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) chaired by PM Narendra Modi today approved the continuation of additional phases of schemes to improve human resources in health and increase the intake at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels.

The scheme will entail a cost of Rs 14,930.92 crore up to 2019-20 and provide new medical colleges by continuing to fund the existing scheme of converting 58 district hospitals into medical colleges by 2019-2020; select additional 24 district hospitals in underserved areas for upgradation as medical colleges by 2021-22. Of the 24 colleges, five are in Bihar; two in Jharkhand; one each in MP, Odisha, Rajasthan and Sikkim, eight in UP and five in West Bengal.

“An amount of Rs 5,587.68 crore is proposed for the ongoing scheme under central share during phase-I; Rs 3,675 in phase-II till 2021-22, of which Rs 2,600 crore is to be spent till 2019-2020,” a government statement said.

The CCEA also cleared the continuation of centrally sponsored scheme for upgrade of existing state government and medical colleges resulting in increase of 10,000 UG seats by 2020-21 and 8,058 PG seats — 4,058 in Phase-l by 2018-19 and 4,000 in Phase-II by 2020-21.

“Increase of UG seats entails Rs 7,795 crore as central share and is likely to be spent till 2021-22. Increase of PG seats under Phase-II entails of Rs 3,024 crore as central share to be spent till 2021-22. Part of these monies will be spent till 2019-20,” the statement said. Nursing scheme approved today enables continuation and completion of the scheme to set up 112 Auxiliary Nursing and Midwifery (ANM) Schools and 136 General Nursing Midwifery (GNM) Schools by 2019-20 in under-served districts.  — TNS
