Manipur ambush: Bodies of six AR personnel flown to native places

Imphal, May 24

Bodies of the six Assam Rifles personnel who were killed in an ambush on May 21 in Chandel district of Manipur were flown to their respective homes from Imphal airport in a special Indian Air Force flight on Tuesday.

Manipur Chief Minister O Ibobi, his deputy Gaikhangam and high ranking officers of the Assam Rifles based in Manipur laid wreath on the slain soldiers in a ceremony held earlier in the day.

Among the dead security men are Junior Commission Officer Baldev Kumar (55) from Himachal Pradesh, Havaldar Susarjit (27), Rifleman Pawan Singh (39) of Jammu (Jammu and Kashmir), Rifleman Mahesh Gurung (43) of Uttarkhand, Riflemen Bhupendra Kumar (32) from Himachal Pradesh and Akhilesh Kumar of Uttar Pradesh, AR sources said.

The six soldiers were killed in an ambush near the Indo-Myanmar border's ‘No Man's Land’ while coming back from a land-slide affected village in Manipur to their base camp.

CorCom, a conglomerate of proscribed outfits, in a statement issued to the media had claimed that the ambush was carried out by them. — PTI
