Chopan Nagar Panchayat Chairman Imtiyaz Ahmed was shot dead by three assailants on Thursday morning, police said.

Imtiyaz Ahmed was shot at while he had gone to play volleyball in the Preet Nagar area near his residence as per daily routine, police said.

Ahmed was rushed to the nearby Community Health Centre from where he was referred to the district hospital but he succumbed to his injuries on the way, police said.

One of the assailants, who was caught by the locals, was beaten up severely and had to be rushed to Varanasi hospital for treatment, police said.

Assistant Superintendent of Police (Naxal), Avdhesh Singh, said the injured assailant had been identified as Rakesh Kumar of Palamu, Jharkhand.

The reason behind the killing was not immediately known, the ASP said, adding that efforts were on to nab the other two assailants. PTI
