Several conspiracy theories emerged as Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis today submitted his resignation after the BJP failed to convince ally Shiv Sena to agree to its terms.

So what happened that led to the bitter impasse to which one more acrimonious chapter was added today by the two warring allies? One theory is that smarting over the “ED humiliation”, NCP chief Sharad Pawar is on a “mission to teach a lesson” to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Amit Shah.

“Pawar has shown he is still a force to reckon with. The Enforcement Directorate move gave a new lease of life to the Nationalist Congress Party and its chief Sharad Pawar succeeded in turning it in his favour. It is quite obvious that the master politician is backing the Sena, which wanted to teach a lesson to Modi, Shah and Fadnavis,” says a political observer. While Pawar may have an axe to grind with the Modi-Shah duo, it seems someone in the BJP also wanted to “show the arrogant Fadnavis his place”. — Vibha Sharma
