Mumbai, June 27
The Maharashtra Police on Wednesday registered a rape case against a senior police officer nearly a month after the victim’s family ran from pillar to post to get their complaint filed.
According to the complaint registered by the MIDC police station at Aurangabad town here, Deputy Commissioner of Police Rahul Shrirame had been sexually exploiting the 23-year-old daughter of a woman constable after promising her a job in the police force.
In her complaint, the survivor said she had come in contact with Shrirame in February regarding a job in the police department. Between February and the first week of June, Shrirame had sexually assaulted her many times, the complaint registered by the police said.
Sources in Aurangabad say the victim and her mother had made oral complaints to senior police officials but none paid heed. Social media networks in the town had been carrying details of the incident before a local newspaper got a whiff of the matter. Both the mother and daughter had to allegedly visit Mumbai and plead with seniors in the police department before a preliminary inquiry was initiated in the matter, according to sources.
Earlier this month, Police Commissioner Chiranjeev Prasad, who had just taken over, asked DCP Shrirame to proceed on leave and instituted a probe into the matter, sources said.
After hearing the victim and her mother, the MIDC Cidco police station at Aurangabad was asked to register an FIR against Shrirame, sources said.
